Communication Barriers Essay - 1900 Words

A truly successful leader not only has to master the necessary business skills, the technology that makes a business efficient, but the greatest tool for success is the art of communication, so you can share your ideas and they are understood and carried out using every communication tool available. A common denominator among managers that fail in business and life is as a result of failing to overcome barriers to communication, these are often as a result of a lack of proper communication skills, prejudice, lack of information, a loss of touch, cultural and language differences. â€Å"A national survey conducted by the U.S. Labor Department concluded that 20 percent of all U.S. managers lack effective communication skills† (Gordon, 2000,†¦show more content†¦Acting as though conflict does not exist erects barriers within a group. When a work unit does not have a method for resolving conflict, that unit will eventually become dysfunctional† (Jones, 1999, p. 5 0). This is a place where companies and leaders fail in their preparation, no one wants to get involved in conflict, but when it does occur we are ill prepared to deal with it. We prepare all kinds of contingency plans for emergencies, we train for job hazards yet neglect the communication needed to handle internal conflict both within ourselves and with our peers. Barriers to communication can be a result of a lack of understanding of a situation or at time it can also result from preconceived ideas. Unfortunately many of these ideas are a result of ignorance; we assume things about people or culture without really knowing or even being informed. The ancient Greeks had strict and strong values on what it meant to be a hero in their society. Individuals who wanted to be seen as a hero had to follow this standard in order to become and be seen as a hero. Being a skilled warrior was not the only requirement, one had to respect authorizes, both governmental and religious. This code even goes on to state that hero’s mind must not be prideful and arrogant. These men had to be modest and humble. Honor of course also played an important role in the homeric code. A hero’s duty was to fight and gain glory through their battles. Through one’s battle they would achieve immortality. Because of this hero constantly place their lives in near death situations on the battlefield. Their performance in battle determined their honor and glory. On the other hand, the company must review the effectiveness of the framework periodically to keep the investment of the stakeholders safe. Bigotry and Discrimination First of all, bigotry is just a weird word for racism. So, what do you think of racism? In my opinion, racism does not belong in this society, much less this world. It would've been much better off without it. Do you know what the stupid thing is? We all do it. Even if we don't realize it. Imagine this situation, say you and your friends of the same race are sitting somewhere, minding your own business, when all of a sudden, a group of people come up to you and start observing your group in the most disrespectful way. I mean you wouldn't really mind. Until they start doing the most shameful thing they can do. They start jeering. About what? Well, take a guess. The way you look, the way you dress, the way you talk, the language that you speak, the way you eat, and the way you walk You wouldn't feel so good about yourself, would you? I don't think so. In fact, you'd even feel pissed off about it. Another thing that's even worse, is when they do the same thing almost every single day and the supervisors that are around, don't do anything about it. It has happened to me more than once, more than twice. So many times, I've lost track. Every time that it has happened, I expect someone to stop it, but once again, I get let down. I mean, I guess it doesn't bother me anymore, but what about the people that are new to this place? They are used to people that look the same. So when they first experience racism, they really feel bad. They might not even know what to do. Also, they might also think that it is okay to do it someone else and expect not to get punished for it. I mean isn't that what the great Martin Luther King fought for? He fought for no racism, stereotype, discrimination, bigotry, and segregation. But he we are, always judging someone else. I guess we have no respect for each other. If we did have respect for people that are different, then I would not be writing this article about racism.

I’ve consulted many resources, but the ones on this list have pride of place and show the most wear and tear. 1. The Associated Press Stylebook Associated Press style and Chicago style (see below) differ in some respects, but many of the listings in this alphabetically organized resource will set you straight about how to treat many common and proper nouns. 2. The Chicago Manual of Style This is the primary resource, after a house style guide, for many American publishing companies and other companies that produce publications, providing guidance about grammar and usage as well as topics like abbreviation, capitalization and other emphasis (such as italics or boldface), numbers, and punctuation. It’s only one of many, but it’s preeminent. 3. The Copyeditor’s Handbook This paperback guide, originally conceived as a companion to Chicago, is similar in organization but formatted more like a textbook (I’ve used it as such with great success), with exercises at the back of each chapter. It’s more accessible but not as comprehensive than the preceding book. 4. Garner’s Modern American Usage Language maven Bryan Garner’s authoritative, encyclopedic tome about proper use of words is the definitive specimen of this type. 5. Merriam-Webster’s Biographical Dictionary This is a handy resource for double-checking names of famous people or their life spans (and years in office or on a throne). The publisher’s general dictionary includes in its appendixes both biographical and geographical dictionaries, but the listings in the stand-alone publications are much more extensive. 6. Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary Actually, I generally use Merriam-Webster Online, but the print version is handy for finding all the words that start with a certain prefix, or coming up with an alliterative adjective. 7. Merriam-Webster’s Geographical Dictionary Find out the current spellings of foreign cities and the official names of countries and their land area and population. The latter figure will be out of date, and you can find this information (and that available in the biographical dictionary) online, but you may prefer flipping pages to clicking through sites. The loss of jobs can be attributed to other factors like the bursting of the tech bubble and its effects on Wall Street, the consolidation of retailing under giants like Wal-Mart, and the after math of September 11 and other events. The Bush administration is convinced that shifting the white collar jobs to the developing countries might cause short term pain but is a part of the positive transformation that will enrich the US economy over time. The Information Technology Association of America (ITAA) also agrees that while outsourcing white collar jobs may have thrown some Americans out of jobs, it will ultimately lower the inflation, create jobs, and boost productivity. Just when layoffs and ‘pay-for-performance’ was taking place, educated and eager workforce emerged in countries like India, China, Malaysia and Vietnam. Outsourcing assists with a form’s globalization strategy, helps broaden infrastructure capabilities, and offers local market access advantages it can help alleviate the technical labor shortages in the West.Other benefits include access to skilled personnel across the world, exploitation of follow-the-sun model to improve delivery schedules, and make up for the gaps in the internal capabilities of the firms
